by K. Fukuyama and Wm. Epstein Dr. Seiji was an excellent lecturer, and enjoyed meeting people at social occasions.
When we were together with "Makoto" privately, he loved to talk, and enjoyed frank exchanges of stimulating ideas. We visited him in Tokyo a couple of times, but we especially remember him in Sendai, because we spent several days together there.
We saw patients in the out-patient clinic and in their bed rooms.
On the next day, Makoto took us to Sakunami-Onsenn, the famous Tohoku Hot springs, where we stayed in a Japanese-style-hotel. ![]() He always emphasized the need for dermatologists to challenge basic science at the level of those in basic science. He was very proud of having his publications not only in the journals read by dermatologists, but also in those for basic scientists. Makoto should be very happy to know that the J.I.D. is now the top rated journal in dermatology for citations.
Makoto enjoyed good food. A memorable chinese dinner was held
in his favorite restaurant in Sendai. When we were traveling to somewhere
in Japan with Makoto, he went into a station store and and bought for us
"Kamaboko," a specially cooked fish paste.
