Herman V. Allington
Dr. Herman V. Allington, born in Richmond, Virginia, on July 19, 1906, received his M.D. degree from the University of California in 1931. He was trained at the New York Post-Graduate Hospital in 1931-1933, and at the office of Dr. George M. MacKee, New York City in 1931-1933. From 1933-1934, he continued to train at the University of California Hospital, Dermatology and Syphilis Clinics, and at the office of Drs. Morrow, Miller, and Taussig in San Francisco. He was certified by the American Board of Dermatology & Syphilogy in 1938 and practiced in Oakland, California from 1934 until his retirement and associated with Drs. H.J. Templeton and C.J. Lunsford. From 1942-1946, Dr. Allington served in the U.S. Navy Reserves Medical Corps and was discharged as Commander. He held a teaching position from 1933-1934 as Clinical Assistant at the University of California Medical School in the Department of Dermatology and Syphilology. Dr. Allington's contributions to the professional societies are numerous and include serving on the Board of Directors for the American Academy of Dermatology from 1962-1964, Chairman of the California Medical Association, Section on Dermatology and Syphilology from 1948-1949, and presidencies in the Pacific Dermatologic Association in 1961 and the San Francisco Dermatological Association in 1941. He is the author of 46 scientific articles and chapters in two textbooks. The Centennial History of American Dermatological Association has an insertion written by Dr. Frederick J. Szymanski commenting: "Herman Allington has advanced the science of cryosurgery and has made his knowledge available to the rest of us through his writings... He is respected and admired by his colleagues."
