The 21st Meeting of the PSRC was convened in London at the venerable
White House Hotel on May 1 and 2, 1998. Big Ben seen through the
moving monument to time and water was created as the logo for this meeting.
In passing, it might be noted that the White House Hotel is situated in
central London, Zone 1, and was a billet for U.S. Army officers during
World War II.
Organizers...reveling in success
The organizers were Drs. Martin Black, John McGrath, Karen Harman,
and Balbir Bhogal. The meeting was splendid and managed to the utmost
by John McGrath. In attendance were speakers from China, Japan, California,
the U.K., and Italy, as well as fellows from the Institute of Dermatology
at St. Thomas' Hospital in England who come from all over the world.
Wistful thinking of the Chairpersons...
Speakers:
The talks from all over were magnificent, well presented, and highly
stimulating. The discussion initially dominated by the faculty ultimately
became, as expected, a general phenomena. Martin Black introduced
special lectures for the first time and these were very well received.
While all were excellent and some were particulary memorable, David Paige
of London, presented an outstanding representation of the dermatological
aspects of HIV infection as seen in England, and John McGrath, in the final
lecture, presented new information on differential diagnosis of inherited
blistering diseases in newborns along with a tantalizing quiz that was
flunked by most of the attendees. During the main talks, Terry Ryan
enunciated a call for more dermatologists to investigate dermatologic diseases
and needs in the Pacific Rim, and Carlo Pincelli introduced us to the possibility
that bucky balls may simulate antioxidants in preventing UV induced apoptosis
in keratinocytes.
During the meeting, old and new friends had a chance to get together
and exchange ideas:
After a short break to change our shorts and comb our hair, we took a walking trip to the British Association of Dermatology (BAD) House to view the U.K. expertise in maintaining history.
And now, the meeting of old friends...
Back at the White House Hotel, the party continued with pints of beer and whiskey and much joviality and conviviality. After the speeches, the band played on with a rock-n-roll motive. All in all, it was a highly successful, stimulating, and fun meeting.
